If you are reading this, congratulations, you have managed to find another obscure blog posted somewhere out there in the digital wilderness.
As Mick Jagger said, “Please allow me to introduce myself”; My name is Jack I am a 20 something year old tech-obsessed Brit. I have always been interested in technology and computers since an early age, and following this passion took me down the traditional route of studying computing at university, and taking internships before getting a graduate job.
It was getting this graduate job, which required moving to London from Oxford, where I first got to fully experienced and immersed myself in the tech scene outside of university. It was only after walking into the ‘real world’ where I got to appreciate all the different avenues and nuances which technology has to offer.
About 3 months ago, I decided it was time to take my first big change, or iteration if you will, and bite the bullet to leave my job and go traveling. This was something my girlfriend and I had been chatting about for ages, and I knew that if I don't do it now, the comfort and lure of work will be too strong and I’ll never do it. There was a good deal of nerves and last minute hesitation when the time came to hand my notice in, but after it was done I felt relief and knew it was the right move. The best things come from those situations where your slightly scared, right?
Fast forward a few months and I'm certain it was the best choice I could have made…not that my parents will agree with that, they’re still a bit baffled. Taking the first proper break I've had since starting university has allowed me to take a broad look at the technology industry as a whole to see what skills and jobs are on the way up and what's not, and to work out where I fit in.
Why am I doing this?
So the main question of the day, ‘Why am I creating this blog?’.
It may seem counter-intuitive but I’m really not a big fan of writing. This stems from being dyslexic which means writing and reading require a lot of extra work and checking to make sure what I've got in my head is what I've actually put on the page. Quick side point, but why is the word describing people who struggle with writing so confusing to spell, or is that just me?
Well, instead of accepting that I suck, I thought it was about time I force myself to get better and who better than mysterious friends on the internet to keep you honest with how you’re doing.
Speaking of mysterious internet friends, it was only when I left that I was able to appreciate the tech community I had been involved with, the friends I'd made, the conversations we’d had and the journeys we’d shared.
Now that I have free time away from the rush of deadlines and clients, it's allowed me to reflect and appreciate the experiences I've been through. It then dawned on me that a lot of the challenges I’d been through and questions I’d had were the same as others, and what I know now would have been so helpful if someone had told me about it a few years ago.
So with all that being said, I've still not answered why I'm creating this blog and what my plans for it are.
My aim for this is to be a place where I can share my thoughts on tech, productivity, stuff I find interesting and what I've learned so far in my career. Hopefully I may be able to answer some of the questions I wish I’d known the answers to when I was just starting out. Like most people, I spent hours trawling the web trying to find the answers to all the questions I had when taking a new or next step in life. I really hope that this can be a place where some of those burning questions get answered.
